[1]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a> Never a word other than truth came out of his mouth. Even when he was telling a joke, he did not lie.<\/p>\nAllah\u2019s Apostle (pbuh), who lived his entire life on the straight path as commanded by Allah the Almighty, asked his ummah to be on the straight path and often emphasized the significance of this matter. He (pbuh) said that \u201ceven if you will not be able to achieve fully, try to be straight as much as you can.\u201d <\/i><\/p>\n
It is narrated on the authority of Sufyan b. Abdullah al-Thaqafi that he said:<\/p>\n
\u201cI asked the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) to tell me one thing about Islam which might dispense with the necessity of my asking anybody other than you. The Holy Prophet (pbuh) remarked:<\/p>\n
\u0642\u064f\u0644\u0652 \u0622\u0645\u064e\u0646\u0652\u062a\u064f \u0628\u0650\u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647\u0650 \u0641\u064e\u0627\u0633\u0652\u062a\u064e\u0642\u0650\u0645\u0652<\/p>\n
\u201cSay I affirm my faith in Allah and then remain steadfast to it.\u201d<\/i> (Muslim, Iman, 62)<\/p>\n
One should first be honest with Allah the Almighty and be on the straight path. Before everything else he should be loyal to his covenant with Allah and be sincere in his feelings, thoughts, intentions, and words. We should also be very careful about our vows, words, and actions done in His name. In this respect, the Prophet (pbuh) taught and directed his companions. The following mentioned incident is related to this issue:<\/p>\n
\u201cAisha (r.a.) departed with some women from Medina to find out what had happened at Uhud. She met Hind b. Amr at a place called Harra. Hind was taking her husband Amr b. Jamuh, her son Khallad, and her brother Abdullah\u2019s bodies loaded on a camel. Aisha (r.a.) asked:<\/p>\n
\u201cHow is the situation back at the battlefield?\u201d She replied:<\/p>\n
\u201cWell. Allah\u2019s Messenger is fine. When he is fine, all troubles mean nothing to us.\u201d Pointing at the bodies on the camel, Aisha (r.a.) asked:<\/p>\n
\u201cWho are these?\u201d Hind said:<\/p>\n
\u201cMy brother Abdullah, my son Khallad, and my husband Amr.\u201d Aisha asked again:<\/p>\n
\u201cWhere are you taking them?<\/p>\n
\u201cTo Medina. I will bury them there.\u201d When she forced her camel to walk, the camel knelt down. Aisha (r.a.) asked:<\/p>\n
\u201cDid it kneel down because of its load?\u201d Hind (r.a.) answered:<\/p>\n
\u201cI do not know. It could carry twice as much as this. But I feel there is something different with it.\u201d She forced the camel to get t up, but it knelt down when they turned towards Medina. When it was directed to Uhud it began to run. Later Hind (r.a.) narrated the incident to the Prophet (pbuh). Allah\u2019s Messenger (pbuh) asked her:<\/p>\n
\u201cYour camel is a servant. Has Amr had any bequest?\u201d<\/i> Hind replied:<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen Amr wanted to go Uhud, he turned towards Qiblah and prayed: O Allah! Bless me with martyrdom. Do not let me come back to my family sad and destitute.\u201d Emphasizing the significance of loyalty to Allah the Almighty Allah\u2019s Messenger (pbuh) said that:<\/p>\n
\u201cThis was why your camel was not walking. O People of Ansar! Whoever among you vows to Allah should fulfill the requirements of his promise. O Hind! Your husband Amr was a faithful servant. When he was martyred angels shaded him with their wings and looked at where he was going to be buried. O Hind! Amr b. Jamuh, your son Hallad, and your brother Abdullah will come together and be friends in Paradise.\u201d<\/i> Hearing this good news Hind (r.a.) requested from Allah\u2019s Messenger (pbuh):<\/p>\n
\u201cO Messenger of Allah! Please pray Allah for me to make me join them.\u201d (Waqidi, I, 264-265; Ibn Hajar, Fath al-Bari<\/i>, III, 216; Ibn Abdilbarr, III, 1168)<\/p>\n
Allah the Almighty gives the following good news to such faithful servants: \u201cIn the case of those who say, Our Lord is Allah, and, further, stand straight and steadfast, the angels descend on them (from time to time): Fear you not! (They suggest), nor grieve! But receive the Glad Tidings of the Garden (of Bliss), which you were promised! We are your protectors in this life and in the Hereafter: therein shall you have all that your souls shall desire; therein shall you have all that you ask for! A hospitable gift from One Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful!\u201d<\/b> (Fussilat 41; 30-32)<\/p>\n
They will neither be afraid nor worried in the horror of the doomsday. This state is asserted by Allah the Almighty in the Qur\u2019an as follows:<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u0627\u064f\u0648\u0644\u0626\u0650\u0643\u064e \u0627\u064e\u0635\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0627\u0628\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0652\u062c\u064e\u0646\u0651\u064e\u0629\u0650 \u062e\u064e\u0627\u0644\u0650\u062f\u0650\u064a\u0646\u064e \u0641\u0650\u064a\u0647\u064e\u0627 \u062c\u064e\u0632\u064e\u0627\u0621\u064b \u0628\u0650\u0645\u064e\u0627 \u0643\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064f\u0648\u0627 \u064a\u064e\u0639\u0652\u0645\u064e\u0644\u064f\u0648\u0646\u064e<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n
\u201cVerily those who say, Our Lord is Allah, and remain firm (on that Path), on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve. Such shall be Companions of the Garden, dwelling therein (for aye): a recompense for their (good) deeds.\u201d<\/b> (al-Ahkaf 46; 13-14)<\/p>\n
Honesty of tongue and heart occupy a very important place in truthfulness. The heart is the ruler of all the other limbs of the body. A body, which owns a heart believing in One God, is a place of peace and happiness. If one\u2019s heart is straight then all his other organs will be straight, too. The tongue is the interpreter of the heart. Its straightness and crookedness affects other parts of the body. In a prophetic saying it is stated that:<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen a person wakes up in the morning, all the limbs goes to the tongue and say: Fear Allah in regards to protect our rights. We will only get punished because of the things that you have said. We are bound up to you. If you are straight we become straight, too. And if you are crooked and go astray, we follow you and become just like you.\u201d <\/i>(Tirmidhi, Zuhd, 61) In another saying in this respect the Prophet (pbuh) said that:<\/p>\n
\u201cA servant\u2019s faith cannot be right unless his heart is straight. His heart cannot be straight unless his tongue is straight.\u201d<\/i> (Ibn Hanbal, III, 198)<\/p>\n
Truthfulness causes improvement of the person\u2019s state and his\/her sins to be pardoned. Oft-Forgiving and Most Benevolent Allah the Almighty orders in the Qur\u2019an:<\/p>\n

\u201cO you who believe fear Allah, and (always) say a word directed to the Right: That He may make your conduct whole and sound and forgive you your sins: he that obeys Allah and His Messenger, has already attained the highest Achievement.\u201d<\/b> (al-Ahzab 33; 70-71)<\/p>\n
Ka\u2019b b. Malik, who was forgiven by Allah the Almighty because of his truthfulness, said that:<\/p>\n
\u201cBy Allah, Allah has never bestowed upon me, apart from His guiding me to Islam, a Greater blessing than the fact that I did not tell a lie to Allah’s Apostle which would have caused me to perish as those who have told a lie perished, for Allah described those who told lies with the worst description He ever attributed to anybody else. Allah said:<\/p>\n
\u201cThey will swear to you by Allah, when you return to them, that you may leave them alone. So leave them alone: for they are an abomination, and Hell is their dwelling place, a fitting recompense for the (evil) that they did. They will swear unto you, that you may be pleased with them. But if you are pleased with them, Allah is not pleased with those who disobey.\u201d<\/b> (al-Tawba 9; 95-96)\u201d (Bukhari, Maghazi, 79)<\/p>\n
Allah\u2019s Messenger (pbuh) stated that truthfulness is one of the principles which determines a person\u2019s end as follows:<\/p>\n

\u201cTruthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. And a man keeps on telling the truth until he becomes a truthful person. Falsehood leads to Al-Fajur (i.e. wickedness, evil-doing), and Al-Fajur (wickedness) leads to the (Hell) Fire, and a man may keep on telling lies till he is written before Allah, a liar.\u201d<\/i> (Bukhari, Adab, 69)<\/p>\n
Allah\u2019s Messenger (pbuh) emphasized the importance of the tongue and speech and warned his companions about its disasters. When Sufyan b. Abdullah (r.a.) asked:<\/p>\n
\u201cO Messenger of Allah! What is the worst thing you worried about me?\u201d He (pbuh) held his tongue and said:<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is.\u201d (Tirmidhi, Zuhd, 61)<\/p>\n
A believer should live on the straight path and never give up telling the truth. If he lives according to this principle, he will be freed from worries and tension and will be truthful even in his dreams. This is stated by the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) as follows: \u201c\u2026And the truest vision will be of one who is himself the most truthful in speech…\u201d<\/i> (Muslim, Ru\u2019ya, 6)<\/p>\n
Jalal al-Din Rumi (q.s.) states that a person should be like a mirror and be balanced in regards to truthfulness and says:<\/p>\n
\u201cHow shall mirror and scales stop their breath (suppress the truth) for fear of hurting and shaming someone? Mirror and scales are such noble touchstones that if you do service to them for two hundred years and then say to the mirror, \u2018I served you so much, so please do not display my ugliness\u201d and say to the scales \u201cI am begging you, please conceal the truth for my sake, display the surplus and do not display the deficiency,\u2019 They will say to you, <\/i><\/p>\n
\u2018O pathetic! Do not make everyone laugh at you and ridicule yourself. Since Allah has raised us up in order that by means of us it may be possible to know the truth, If this do not happen (if we fail to display the truth), what worth have we, O young man? How shall we become a standard for the face of the fair?\u2019\u201d<\/i> (Mathnawi<\/i>, I, verses: 3546-3551)<\/p>\n
Truthfulness occupies an important place in our social life, too. Its significant place in commercial transactions should especially be emphasized. It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) happened to pass by a heap of wheat. He thrust his hand in that heap and his fingers were moistened. He asked the owner:<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/i> He replied:<\/p>\n
\u201cO Messenger of Allah! These have been drenched by rainfall. The Holy Prophet (pbuh) remarked:<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy did you not place the drenched part of the heap over so that the people could see it? He who deceives is not of me (is not my follower).\u201d<\/i> (Muslim, Iman, 164)<\/p>\n
In the following verse, Allah the Almighty commands the believers to deal with the disbelievers justly especially if they are truthful:<\/p>\n
\u201c\u2026So long as they are true to you, be true to them\u2026\u201d <\/b>(al-Tawba 9; 7)<\/b><\/p>\n
Being faithful and living on the straight path is a really difficult task to do. Our Lord Almighty shows us the method to alleviate the difficulty of this task as follows: \u201c\u2026be with the truthful.\u201d<\/b> (al-Tawba 9; 119) In order to learn truthfulness, a believer should be with the truthful. As long as their togetherness continues, the believer begins to resemble them. Even if he cannot be completely like them, at least he could protect himself from evil.<\/p>\n
One could achieve high ranks by being with the truthful. Even the dog of the fellows of the cave (Ashab al-Kahf<\/i>) is mentioned in the Qur\u2019an and its name is eternalized for its loyalty. It is also impossible to achieve salvation just by one\u2019s own actions. However, if one\u2019s intention is honest, Allah\u2019s endless mercy will reach him\/her and then he\/she can prosper.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
