\u201c\u2026they rehearse the Signs of Allah all night long, and they prostrate themselves in adoration\u201d (Al-i Imr\u0101n 3; 113)<\/p>\n

\n

The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) showed the utmost reverence and attention to the Book of his Lord. He incessantly recited it with awe and longing. Following his tradition, companions, too, never left the Word of Allah from their hands or from their tongues. Aws b. Huzayfa from the tribe of Saqif narrates his observations in this respect:<\/p>\n

\u201cOne night Allah\u2019s Messenger did not come next to us for a long period after the night prayer. We asked:<\/p>\n

\u201cO Messenger of Allah! Why were you so late to come back to the congregation?\u201d He said:<\/p>\n

\u201cI have formed a habit of reciting a portion (hizb) from the Qur\u2019an. I did not want to come out before I fulfilled my habit.\u201d<\/i> In the morning we asked the companions:<\/p>\n

\u201cHow do you divide the Qur\u2019an into portions (hizbs<\/i>) to read?\u201d They replied:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe combine the first three chapters of the Qur\u2019an into the first portion; the next five chapters into another portion, the following seven, nine, eleven, and thirteen chapters into different portions. And finally we put the chapters from surat Q\u0101f<\/i> (50) till the end of the Qur\u2019an into another portion, which makes a total of seven portions.\u201d (Ibn \u1e24anbal, IV, 9; Ibn Majah, Sal\u0101t, 178)<\/p>\n

When the Prophet (pbuh) stood in the presence of Allah the Almighty to offer ritual prayer in the middle of the night, he was reciting the Qur\u2019an for hours and he was getting an avid pleasure from it. He stated the wisdom of reciting the Qur\u2019an in his solitary prayers at night as follows:<\/p>\n

\u201cAllah would listen to none of His servants as much as He listens to the servant who performs two rak\u2019ahs of prayer and recites the Qur\u2019an at night\u2026\u201d<\/i> (Tirmidh\u012b, Fa\u1e0d\u0101\u2019il al-Qur\u2019an, 17)<\/p>\n

Recitation of the Qur\u2019an must be letter by letter, with tart\u012bl<\/i>, and in accordance with the rules of the recitation of the Qur\u2019an (or tajw\u012bd<\/i>), for Allah the Almighty ordered His Messenger (pbuh):<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026and recite the Quran in slow, measured rhythmic tones.\u201d<\/b> (al-Muzzammil 73; 4) Just like all the other orders of Allah, the Prophet (pbuh) followed this order from our Lord with complete obedience and recited the Qur\u2019an as it is required.<\/p>\n

Tart\u012bl<\/i> actually means \u201corder\u201d and \u201cin tune.\u201d In relation to the recitation of the Qur\u2019an it means reciting every letter of the Qur\u2019an slowly and in the way that they are supposed to be recited. In the above mentioned verse, strengthening the imperative verb \u201crattil<\/i>\u201d<\/b> with its infinitive form \u201ctartilan<\/i>\u201d<\/b> points out the Divine request about how well the tartil<\/i> of the Qur\u2019an must be. Recitation of the Qur\u2019an is not just about beauty of the reciter\u2019s voice. It is not like singing a song. On the contrary, it means feeling the eloquence, rhetoric, and the relation between verses and their meanings as much as possible while reciting the Qur\u2019an. This is why tart\u012bl<\/i> and tajw\u012bd <\/i>are very important in reading the Qur\u2019an.<\/p>\n

Our Prophet (pbuh), whose entire life was passed by receiving Divine revelations and conveying them to humanity, paid extra attention to the Qur\u2019an in the month of Ramadan. Angel Gabriel (pbuh) would meet him every night during the month of Ramadan, and they recited the Qur\u2019an to each other. (Muslim, Fa\u1e0d\u0101il, 50) Even though they had done this once a year, they <\/i>did it twice in the year the Prophet (pbuh) passed away. (Bukhar\u012b, Fa\u1e0d\u0101il al-Qur\u2019an, 7)<\/p>\n

Just like he enjoyed recitation of the Qur\u2019an, the Prophet (pbuh) also enjoyed listening to other\u2019s recitation. This is why he would especially go and listen to the readers of the Qur\u2019an among his companions. It is narrated by Abdullah bin Masud: <\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cAllah\u2019s Apostle said to me, <\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cRecite the Qur\u2019an for me,\u201d <\/i>I told him, <\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cShall I recite it to you although it had been revealed to you?\u201d <\/i>He said, <\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cI like to hear the Qur\u2019an from others.\u201d <\/i>So I recited Suratal-Nisa\u2019 till I reached: <\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cHow will it be then when We bring from each nation a witness, and We bring you (O Muhammad) as a witness against these people?\u201d<\/b> <\/i>(al-Nis\u0101 4; 41) <\/i>Then he said, \u201cStop!\u201d <\/i>And behold, his eyes were overflowing with tears.\u201d (Bukhar\u012b, Tafs\u012br, 4\/9; Muslim, Mus\u0101fir\u016bn, 247)<\/p>\n

Since the eyes of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) would overflow with tears when listening to the Qur\u2019an, then it would only be more appropriate for Muslims to contemplate, and show respect to the Qur\u2019an and to be in between a state of fear of Allah and hope of His mercy.<\/p>\n

Sometimes Allah\u2019s Apostle would secretly listen to his companions\u2019 recitation and be filled with joy. In this regard, Aisha (r.a.) narrates the following incident:<\/p>\n

One day Aisha (r.a.) was late to meet with the Messenger of Allah. He asked her the reason for her delay and Aisha replied:<\/p>\n

\u201cO Messenger of Allah! There was a man in the mosque, that I haven\u2019t seen anybody who can read the Qur\u2019an more beautiful than him.\u201d Upon this response, the Prophet (pbuh) went to mosque and saw that the man was Salim (r.a.). Then he expressed his feelings saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cAll praises are due to Allah for having a person like you among my people.\u201d<\/i> (Ibn Hanbal, VI, 165)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/b><\/p>\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Reading the Qur\u2019an Understandingly<\/h3>\n

The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) placed the Qur\u2019an in all aspects of his life and was identified with it, and presented a living example of it through his good manners. Below is how elegantly the poet Muallim Naci expresses this fact:<\/p>\n

\u201cH\u00fcsn-i Kur\u2019\u00e2n\u2019\u0131 g\u00f6r\u00fcr insan olur hayr\u00e2n sana<\/p>\n

Dest-i kudretle yaz\u0131lm\u0131\u015f Hilye\u2019dir Kur\u2019an sana\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople admire him seeing the eloquence, rhetoric, and beauties of the Qur\u2019an in him. This Qur\u2019an is your hilyah (description of your qualities) which was written by the Hand of Allah in order to praise you and describe your good manners.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

Those who read Allah\u2019s Words actually read about the personal appearance, manners, character, and life of His Messenger (pbuh). This is why believers should occupy themselves with the Qur\u2019an, read it regularly, contemplate its meaning and apply it to their lives. Our Prophet (pbuh) says that:<\/p>\n

\u201cRecite the Qur\u2019an, for on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who recite it\u2026\u201d<\/i> (Muslim, Mus\u0101fir\u016bn, 252)<\/p>\n

\u00a0The Prophet (pbuh) also encouraged his followers to read the Qur\u2019an regularly saying, \u201cWhoever reads a letter from the Qur\u2019an, a pious deed will be recorded for him\/her. For each good deed, there will be ten rewards. I am not saying that alif-lam-mim (<\/i>\u0627\u0644\u0645<\/i>) is one letter, on the contrary alif is one letter; l\u0101m is one letter; and m\u012bm is one letter.\u201d<\/i> (Tirmidh\u012b, Fa\u1e0d\u0101il al-Qur\u2019an, 16) Therefore, it is very important for believers to contemplate and read the Qur\u2019an again and again. The following incident is very important in this respect.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce a man came to the Messenger of Allah and asked:<\/p>\n

\u201cO Messenger of Allah! Which act is more pleasing?\u201d The Prophet (pbuh) replied:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe actions of h\u0101l and murtah\u012bl\u201d<\/i> When the man asked again:<\/p>\n

\u201cWho are h\u0101l<\/i> and murtah\u012bl<\/i>?\u201d Allah\u2019s Messenger (pbuh) said:<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are those who read the Qur\u2019an from the beginning to the end and whenever they come to the end, they restart reading it from the beginning.\u201d<\/i> (Tirmidh\u012b, Qira\u0101t, 11)<\/p>\n

Even though reading the Qur\u2019an is considered as an act of worship and great spiritual rewards were promised for it, the real object is to understand it, to live in accordance with it, and to convey its message to other people. This is why a person who is reading it should be in a special state of mind. That is to turn respectfully and longingly towards Allah; to think about the admonitions of the Qur\u2019an; to obey sincerely to its rules; to take lessons from its stories and parables; to say \u201csubh\u0101nallah<\/i>\u201d every time an attribute of Allah is mentioned; to ask for Allah\u2019s blessings every time Paradise or Allah\u2019s mercy are stated; and to take refuge in Allah whenever Hell or Allah\u2019s punishment are mentioned.<\/p>\n

While reading the Qur\u2019an believers should think about how that they are in the presence of Allah and He always sees them. They should be in such a state of mind that their Lord is watching and directly talking to them. While reading the Qur\u2019an they should contemplate about Allah, His attributes, His actions, and His majesty; ask for His forgiveness, mercy, and compassion; visualize how enemies of Allah were destroyed and their exemplary ends; and remember the Prophets and other friends of Allah. In short, they should read the Qur\u2019an and be aware of what they are reading. Those who are not able to understand its meaning should prepare their souls for its recitation and act respectfully being aware of that they are performing an act of worship. Thus, their heart will be enlightened with respect and reverence, and the magnificence of the Book of Allah will manifest itself in their hearts. If it is possible, believers should read the Qur\u2019an along with its exegesis. If they cannot, then they should attend the sermons and lessons of knowledgeable commentators.<\/p>\n

The companions of the Prophet (pbuh) would divide the Qur\u2019an into groups of ten verses; and they would not begin reading another ten before understanding the previous ten verses and applying their rules in their lives. They used to say that \u201cwe got knowledge and action together.\u201d (Ibn Hanbal, V, 410) For instance, Imam Malik narrated that Abdullah b. Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) studied to learn surat al-Baqarah<\/i> (2) for eight years. (Muwatt\u0101<\/i>, Qur\u2019an, 11) In regards to the latter narration al-Baj\u012b makes the following commentary: \u201cThis was not because of his weak memory; but he spent so much time in order to learn and apply Qur\u2019an\u2019s requirements, rules, and other things related to them.\u201d (Katt\u0101n\u012b, II, 191)<\/p>\n

Jal\u0101l al-D\u012bn Rum\u012b eloquently states:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is related that during the time of the Prophet anyone who knew one sura by heart, or half a sura, was called a great person and pointed out, \u201cHe knows a sura by heart,\u201d since in that day they devoured the Qur\u2019an. They were reading the Qur\u2019an like they were devouring something. To devour six ba\u1e6dmans or twelve ba\u1e6dmans of bread,<\/i>[1]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a> is certainly a great accomplishment. But people who put bread in their mouths without chewing it and spit it out again can devour thousands of tons in that way. There happed the warning \u201cThere are many readers of the Qur\u2019an to whom Qur\u2019an curses.\u201d This warning is about those who do not understand the meaning of the Qur\u2019an.\u201d<\/i> (Fihi M\u0101 F\u012bh<\/i>, p. 78)<\/p>\n

The meanings of the Qur\u2019an are like an endless ocean. It is just like Muhammad Parsa (q.s.) states: \u201cIf the real meanings of the verses and letters of the Qur\u2019an were revealed, seven heavens and earth could not stand their weight of manifestation.\u201d<\/p>\n

A thinker states:<\/p>\n

\u201cEven though all kinds of thoughts about the universe and the existence have been discussed and disclosed, endless and matchless meanings of the Qur\u2019an are waiting behind the curtains in layers for the day they will be understood.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

Just because understanding the Qur\u2019an with all its depth is beyond human capacity, our job is to not quit reading it and to do our best to learn and apply its meanings as much as we can.<\/p>\n

This is why we should read the words of the Lord of the universe and all creation with reverence and respect; because getting the utmost benefit from the Qur\u2019an depends on such respectful reading.<\/p>\n

Reverence or awe is the people\u2019s respect for their Lord. Those who have knowledge and wisdom and whose hearts are teemed with reverence for Allah prostrate before their Lord and admit His majesty when reading the Qur\u2019an. This is stated in the following verse:<\/p>\n

\u201cThey fall down on their faces, weeping, and it increased humility in them.\u201d<\/b> (al-Isr\u0101<\/i> 17; 109)<\/p>\n

The Prophet (pbuh) called those who continuously and reverently read the Qur\u2019an, live in accordance with its principles, and follow its orders and prohibitions in every aspect of their lives as \u201cthe people of the Qur\u2019an.\u201d<\/b> On Judgment Day, the Holy Qur\u2019an will make every effort to save these people, whom it causes to spend their nights sleepless and their mornings thirsty (because of fasting). (Ibn Majah, Adab, 52) Another saying of the Prophet (pbuh) expresses this fact as follows:<\/p>\n

\u201cAbu Umama said he heard Allah\u2019s Messenger (pbuh) say: <\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cRecite the Qur\u2019an, for on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who recite it. Recite the two bright ones, al-Baqara and Surah al-\u2018Imran, for on the Day of Resurrection they will come as two clouds or two shades, or two flocks of birds in ranks, pleading for those who recite them\u2026\u201d<\/i> (Muslim, Mus\u0101fir\u016bn, 253)<\/p>\n

The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) expresses that people of the Qur\u2019an will be helpful not only for themselves but also for their relatives on Judgment Day:<\/p>\n

\u201cNarrated by Mu\u2019adh al-Juhan\u012b: <\/i>The Prophet (pbuh) said: <\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cIf anyone recites the Qur\u2019an and acts according to its contents, on the Day of Judgment his parents will be given to wear a crown whose light is better than the light of the sun if it was placed in the house of this world. So what do you think of him who acts according to his.\u201d<\/i> (Ab\u016b Daw\u016bd, Witr, 14)<\/p>\n

Those who recite the Qur\u2019an but do not act according to its contents cannot be considered as the people of the Qur\u2019an. What is essential for a believer is to make the effort to have the Qur\u2019an the center of his\/her life. In fact the importance of understanding the meaning of the Qur\u2019an and feeling it in the hearts is stated in the following lines of poetry:<\/p>\n

Kavl-i B\u00e2ri\u2019yi i\u015fit B\u00e2ri\u2019den<\/p>\n

Perdedir ge\u00e7 ne\u011fam-\u0131 k\u00e2r\u00eeden.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cO reader of the Qur\u2019an! Open the eyes of your heart and see the Word of Allah and hear it from Him the Almighty the Rightful. Melodies of the reciter are curtains before you; do not get attached to them.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

In order to learn and understand the Qur\u2019an, assembling in and conversing about it is one of the acts of obedience praised by the Messenger of Allah (pbuh). The blessings awaiting for such people are expressed in the following saying of the Prophet (pbuh):<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026and those persons who assemble in the house among the houses of Allah and recite the Book of Allah and they learn and teach the Qur\u2019an among themselves there would descend upon them the tranquility; and mercy would cover them; and the angels would surround them; and Allah makes a mention of them in the presence of those near Him\u2026\u201d<\/i> (Muslim, Dhikr, 38)<\/p>\n

Allah\u2019s Messenger (pbuh) attached the utmost attention to the Qur\u2019an and loved and held dear to his companions who did the same. In fact he appointed Uthm\u0101n b. al-Abi al-\u2019A\u1e63 from the representatives of the Thaq\u012bf tribe as their leader because, even though he was the youngest, he was the most knowledgeable of the Qur\u2019an among them.<\/p>\n

Representatives of the tribe of Thaq\u012bf had left Uthm\u0101n b. al-Abi al-\u2019A\u1e63 with their animals, because he was the youngest among them. Whenever they went to sleep in the middle of the day, Uthm\u0101n (r.a.) was going to the Prophet (pbuh), asking questions about Islam, listening and learning the Holy Qur\u2019an. Thus he memorized some chapters of the Qur\u2019an.<\/p>\n

Uthm\u0101n (r.a.), who took an oath of allegiance to the Prophet (pbuh) and converted into Islam before the other representatives from his tribe, was going to Ab\u016b Bakr or Ubay b. Qa\u2019b (may Allah be pleased with them) and asking them questions , whenever the Prophet (pbuh) was busy. Allah\u2019s Messenger (pbuh) liked his efforts and loved him for that. When the representatives of Thaq\u012bf wanted to go back to their tribe, they said:<\/p>\n

\u201cO Messenger of Allah! Appoint one of us as our leader.\u201d And the Prophet (pbuh) appointed Uthm\u0101n b. al-Abi al-\u2019A\u1e63 as their leader even though he was the youngest among them. (Ibn Sa\u2019d, V, 508; Ibn Hish\u0101m, IV, 185; Ibn Hanbal, IV, 218)<\/p>\n

The Prophet\u2019s (pbuh) regard for the people of the Qur\u2019an also comprised of the dead ones. Narrated by Jabir bin Abdullah:<\/p>\n

\u201cAt Uhud the Prophet grouped the martyrs into twos to bury them in one grave, and then <\/i>he asked, <\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cWhich of them knew more of the Quran?\u201d <\/i>When one of them was pointed out to him, he put that one first in the grave, giving priority to the one who knew the Qur\u2019an better, and said, <\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cI will be a witness for them on the Day of Resurrection.\u201d <\/i><\/p>\n

He ordered them to be buried with their blood on their bodies and they were neither washed nor was a funeral prayer offered for them.\u201d (Bukhari, Jan\u0101iz, 73, 75)<\/p>\n

All these show that carriers of the Qur\u2019an were of great value both in the presence of Allah the Almighty and His Messenger (pbuh).<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Companions\u2019 Preoccupation with the Qur\u2019an<\/h3>\n

Companions, who were disciplined under the Prophet\u2019s supervision, paid the greatest attention to the Qur\u2019an. They were moved by the Qur\u2019an and lived with it. They read the Qur\u2019an so much that they did not even want to spend a single day without reading it and looking at its pages. They began their days with the Qur\u2019an and they even advised those who had eye problems to look at it in order to get cured. According to the reports, Uthm\u0101n (r.a.) wore out two Qur\u2019ans from extensive reading. (Kattan\u012b, II, 197)<\/p>\n

Umar b. al-Khatt\u0101b (r.a.) used to tell Abu Musa al-Ashar\u012b (r.a.), who was a very good Qur\u2019an reciter:<\/p>\n

\u201cO Abu Musa! Remind us our Lord.\u201d And Abu Musa would recite the Qur\u2019an. (Ab\u016b Nuaym, I, 258) On an occasion Umar (r.a.) told Abu Musa (r.a.):<\/p>\n

\u201cMy brother! Enrapture us towards our Lord.\u201d Thus, he began to recite the Qur\u2019an. After he recited some parts from the Qur\u2019an, people called Umar to prayer. As if awakened from a spiritual world, Umar wonderingly told them:<\/p>\n

\u201cHave not we been already in prayer?\u201d (Ibn Sa\u2019d, IV, 109) This incident also proves us how much enjoyment companions were getting from listening to the Qur\u2019an.<\/p>\n

Even though Allah\u2019s Messenger (pbuh) ordered his companions to read the Qur\u2019an much, he also warned those who exaggerated. Neither Allah nor His Messenger (pbuh) approved exaggeration in the matters of the religion. \u2018Abdullah bin \u2018Amr bin Al-\u2018As narrated:<\/p>\n

\u201cAllah\u2019s Apostle (pbuh) said to me, <\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cO \u2018Abdullah! Do you think that I have not been informed that you fast during the day and offer prayers all the night?\u201d <\/i><\/p>\n

\u2018Abdullah replied, \u201cO Allah\u2019s Apostle! Of course I know that you have been informed, but I only do so to reach God\u2019s pleasure.\u201d <\/i>The Prophet said,<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t do that; fast for a few days and then give it up for a few days, offer prayers and also sleep at night, as your body has a right on you, and your wife has a right on you, and your guest has a right on you. And it is sufficient for you to fast three days in a month, as the reward of a good deed is multiplied ten times, so it will be like fasting throughout the year.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0I insisted on fasting and so I was given a hard instruction. I said, <\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cO Allah\u2019s Apostle! I have power.\u201d <\/i>The Prophet said, <\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cFast like the fasting of the Prophet David and do not fast more than that.\u201d <\/i>I said, <\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cHow was the fasting of the Prophet of Allah, David?\u201d He said, <\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cHalf of the year, (i.e. he used to fast on every alternate day) and recite the whole Qur\u2019an once a month.\u201d <\/i>Abdullah said, <\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cI can recite more (in a month),\u201d <\/i>The Prophet (pbuh) said:<\/p>\n

\u201cThen recite it once in every twenty days.\u201d<\/i> Abdullah said, <\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cI can recite more (in a month),\u201d and the argument went on till the Prophet said, <\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cRecite the Qur\u2019an once each seven days; do not exceed this limit.\u201d<\/i> The more the amount was increased, apparently the more it was to my disadvantage. And the Prophet (pbuh) added:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou do not know that maybe you will have a long life.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

Afterwards when \u2018Abdullah became old, he said, \u201cIt would have been better for me if I had accepted the Prophet\u2019s advice.\u201d (Bukh\u0101r\u012b, Sawm, 55-56-57; Muslim, Kit\u0101b al-Sawm, 181-193)<\/p>\n

Even though this companion realized how big his mistake was for not listening to the advice of the Prophet (pbuh), he tried to keep his promise to the Messenger of Allah (pbuh). Because of his love and submission to the Prophet (pbuh) he spent the last days of his life by forcing himself to complete his acts of worship in order to not break his promise. According to the reports, in the final days of his life he read one-seventh of the Qur\u2019an in the morning in order to rest a little at night. When he needed strength, he would take a break for a few days from fasting; but later he would fast on other days in the amount of the days he could not fast.<\/p>\n

In the following report of Abu Huraira (r.a.) the Prophet (pbuh) also expressed the significance of not torturing oneself:<\/p>\n
