97. It is narrated from Muadh al-Juhani (r.a.) that a person came to the Prophet and asked:

“Which jihad is rewarded more?”

The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said:

“The jihad of those who remember (perform dhikr) Allah the most!”

The man asked:

“Which fasting is rewarded more?”

The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said:

“The fasting of those who remember (perform dhikr) Allah the most!”

After that the Companion repeated the same question for performing prayers, for giving zakat, performing Hajj, and giving charity. The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) gave the same answer for all:

“Those who remember (perform dhikr) Allah the most!”

Upon this, Abu Bakr (r.a.) said to Umar (r.a.):

“O Abu Hafs! Those who remember (perform dhikr) Allah the most carried all of the rewards!”

When the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) heard this, he turned towards them and said:

“Yes, that is right!” (Ahmad, III, 438; Haythami, X, 74)
