FROM TANZİMAT TO THE SECOND MEŞRUTİYET (1839-1908) THE PRINTED TURKISH TRANSLATIONS AND COMMENTARIES OF THE HOLY QURAN
The goal of this work is to set forth the printed Turkish translation and the commentaries of the Holy Quran from Tanzimat to 2nd Meşrutiyet.
This work contains an introduction section, two chapters and a conclusion part. In the introductory section we examine the political, social and cultural structure of Tanzimat period.
In the first chapter we look at the issue of translation of the Holy Quran to other languages, especially to the Turkish language, which includes the history, the definition and the types of tranlations.
In the second chapter, the translation and the commentaries of the Holy Quran is clasified according to “Complete Commentaries”, “Cüz’ Commentaries”, “Surah Commentaries” and “Ayah (Verse) Commentaries” and they are investigated in the cronological order.
In the last part we came to the conclusion that almost all the works one way or another are supported by the goverment. The work in this period was not mere academic but concern with the need of the society. Instead of verbatim translations, the translators and commentators try their hard to make things clearly and easily understandable, and make use of the same well-known sources. In this period, the translations of “Surah Commentaries” is much more than that of “Complete Commentaries”.
